Robert E. Dupin III

A Tribute to a Very Special Friend of the Chrysler 300 Club

For those of us who were lucky enough to have known Bob Dupin, his memory is bittersweet. Bob was born in 1947 and died in 1996. No one could hope to have a better friend or pen pal than Bob. He answered every letter I ever wrote him, and all of them are published here. I doubt many people saved their letters from other club members, but I have all of mine.

When I first learned of the 300 club in 1976, Bob Dupin was the first member I ever spoke to. My friend Bob Mackey, who was the ultimate "300 Nut" and is mentioned throughout this site, worked nights for AT&T and used to put up conference calls for the three of us. Those were great calls, and they helped me to learn more about the 300. I also learned about Bob Dupin's nightly activities, which were much like the activities  of Bob Mackey and myself. They  consisted of terrorizing anything that moved by destroying it with a 300.

In 1977 I gave Bob Dupin  his well earned nickname, "The Midnight Racer," based on the late night street races he told me about.  This is mentioned in the April 1, 1977 letter  he wrote me. He loved his nickname, and used it thereafter in reference to both himself and the 300D he owned at the time, which was equipped with a Daytona 300C engine.  I'm glad that I was able to give him something that brought him a little happiness.

In our letters, which I am sure you'll enjoy, you'll hear it all.....history, gripes, and car prices you won't believe. I lost touch with Bob after a while, but he was always there for club members. I'm sure he's still there for us.  Below is the Chrysler 300 Club International Inc. tribute to Bob, printed shortly after his passing. Bob's white air conditioned Fuel Injection  300D coupe was most recently owned by club member Bob Slaten. His sister Elizabeth still lives in Kentucky and is married to club member Bob Wieland, who owns a 300K. Good choice, Bob! The K is  what we learned to outrun the police with.
